The Board of the Lithuanian Parliament has decided to prohibit the sale of alcohol in the buildings of the Parliament starting the 1st of January. Previously, there were no restrictions on the sale of alcohol in the restaurant on the premises, though the Parliament café carried only low percentage spirits, wine and beer.
Deputy Parliamentary Speaker and member of the Liberal and Centre Union Raimondas Šukys opposed the decision, noting its inadequacy in achieving stated aims.
Deputy Parliamentary Speaker and member of the Labour Party Virginija Baltraitienė also felt prohibiting alcohol would not solve any problems.
Secretary General of the Parliament Gintautas Vilkelis agreed, noting that the prohibition cannot prevent the Members of Parliament from drinking their own alcoholic beverages in their offices.
The issue will be considered by the Lithuanian Commission for Ethics and Procedures as well as by all Members of the Parliament.
