Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus has signed a decree appointing Andrius Kubilius to the post of Prime Minister of Lithuania. The candidacy of the leader of the Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christians Democrats, which is the party with the highest number of seats in the Lithuanian Parliament, was presented to the Parliament on Tuesday.
Yesterday the Parliament voted to approve Mr. Kubilius' candidacy for the post of Prime Minister. President Adamkus has assigned the Prime Minister the task of forming the new government within fifteen days and presenting its structure for approval.
Newly appointed Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius does not deny the possibility that the new government may have to take further measures to fight the current economic crisis. According to Mr. Kubilius, the partners of the coalition will make their final decision regarding the programme for the government on Sunday, and they are planning to present it to the Lithuanian Parliament next Thursday.
Today in the afternoon Mr. Kubilius met with representatives from non-governmental environmental organizations. The representatives were consulted for their opinions on the candidacy for the post of Lithuania's Minister of the Environment of Mr. Arūnas Burkšas, who is a member of the Rising Nation party.
