The two parties projected to have won the most votes in weekend elections are holding rival talks about forming a Romanian coalition government while awaiting the final results.
President Traian Basescu has yet to name a prime minister, and his former Democratic Liberal Party insists it won the most votes in Sunday's ballot.
The Election Office says the Social Democracy Party won about 33.6 percent of the vote and the centrist Democratic Liberals have almost 33 percent. The Liberal Party has 18.6 percent.
Liberal Party lawmaker Ludovic Orban says his party would consider joining a coalition only if it controlled the post of premier.
The final vote results are expected later Tuesday
