| A Ą E Ę Ė I Į Y O U Ų Ū Vowels A, E and O can be either short or long. At first, you will not be able to say which A, E and O are long and which are short. However the nasal vowels Ą, Ę, Į, and Ų are always long, so you will not have doubts about them. Have in mind that the nasal vowels are not pronounced through the nose. They only mean a long vowel. Vowel I is a short vowel, whereas Y is long. Vowel U is a short vowel, whereas Ū is long. A very important thing to know is that the letter i means a softening vowel. I will talk about it in the next lesson.
