Lithuanian has four tenses. At the moment you only know one of them - the present tense. Now we will learn the past tense.

You also remember that there are three types of verbs:

1) jis perka (he buys) - pirkti
2) jis turi (he has) - turėti
3) jis sako (he says) - sakyti

These three types of verbs have different endings. But as you see in the table at the bottom, they have different endings in the past tense too:


Present tense

aš - perku, turiu, sakau.
tu - perki, turi, sakai.
jis, ji, jie, jos - perka, turi, sako.
mes - perkame, turime, sakome.
jūs - perkate, turite, sakote.


Past tense

aš - pirkau, turėjau, sakiau.
tu - pirkai, turėjai, sakei.
jis, ji, jie, jos - pirko, turėjo, sakė.
mes - pirkome, turėjome, sakėme.
jūs - pirkote, turėjote, sakėte.


Pirmadienį jis pirko televizorių, o dabar perka kompiuterį. On Monday he was buying a TV, and now he is buying a computer.
Atsiprašau, kad sakiau tau eiti namo. I am sorry that I was telling you to go home.
Turėjai du pieštukus, bet dabar jau turi keturis. You had two pencils, but now you already have four.
